When I was still a baby or toddler, as the legend goes, I had green “feetie-jammies” and was forever after known to my dad as “Grinch.” I can count the number of times I remember my dad calling my by my given name on one hand—with a couple of fingers left over.
Don’t get any ideas. With the possible exception of my big brothers, no one else has ever been allowed to call me Grinch. Especially since my dad died eight years ago.
I received a package a week ago from my brother with the following clue:
If roses are red and violets are blue, then who’s mostly green but now some black, too?

So this is the first Christmas that the Grinch has his—um, I mean her—black belt. I think my dad would be proud. Thanks, FUM!

Overheard during this morning’s math lesson:
Dad: What time is it six hours after nine p.m.?
Henry: (Struggling to figure it out)
Dad: Well, if three hours after nine p.m. is midnight, what is three hours after that?
Henry: Dad, I actually don’t know because that’s the middle of the night!

Walk through any grocery store this season and you’ll see Rachael Ray’s perky little face adorning everything Nabisco.

I spotted these Limited Edition graham crackers and thought it might be fun for Emma and Henry to make the little gingerbread-ish house pictured on the box.
Graham crackers actually don’t make very good gingerbread house construction materials unless you are gluing them to a cardboard box. They can’t be cut to the size and shape you want them and they crumble pretty easily.
Never daunted, Henry designed, constructed, and tested his very own gingerbread bomb shelter. The chips you see are actually the grenades which brought about the destruction of the shelter. Several little gingerbread men met their demise beneath the fallen walls.

The gingerbread graham crackers themselves are really tasty. They’re like a cross between regular honey grahams and Nabisco’s crunchy gingersnap cookies. Not so good for house construction, but great with a cold glass of milk!

No gingerbread houses for us this year. This Christmas I think we’ll go with the gingerbread Tie Fighter or At-At.

I found this ornament today and couldn’t resist it due to the inexplicable resemblance to our 37th president.
Okay, so squint a little. The photo doesn’t do it justice.

You don’t always have to blatantly eavesdrop to catch funny little snippets of odd conversations when you’re among lots of people. Recently, we came across a great website called Overheard in New York.
Of course, every day with children can be a verbal carnival. Henry came up to me this evening while I was eating nachos and exclaimed loudly, “Your breath smells so much better than last time I smelled your breath!” Then he quietly asked me if he could have some nachos. Sometimes it’s a good thing strangers aren’t listening.

We just got back from a long weekend in the Motor City.
Downtown no longer looks like it has been hit by a bomb blast. Having lived away during the contruction of both new stadiums, however, it seems like they simply appeared out of nowhere. Driving up the Woodward corridor was strange, but encouraging.
I still love the Guardian Building with its incredible Native American design theme.

Especially since the lobby is now home to a branch store of City Knits!

We give the Patel Hotel five stars, as usual. There’s nothing like waking up in the morning to freshly made chai complete with fresh ginger and stone-ground spices!
Auntie enjoyed having all her kids together again.
