WABAC Machine

It seems that when Joe was a kid, he watched too much Underdog and not enough Rocky & Bullwinkle.

He didn’t know what the WABAC Machine was. And I married him thinking he was a geek. Sheesh!

Check it out: Mr. Peabody and Sherman are coming to the big screen!

Miss Detroit in Winter?!

Posted by fabricpile Mon, 22 Jan 2007 15:29:00 GMT

It might sound crazy to get all nostalgic about the days when we lived in an older Detroit suburb, but there were things we could do there that just aren’t possible here on the prairie.

One of the best things about living in Berkley was being just a few blocks away from Westborn Market.

Kira, Max (I can’t think of toddler Max as Mark) and I used to pull the wagon over to Westborn—even in the winter—and bring back wonderful fruits and vegetables. The produce guys could always tell you exactly where the fruits originated and were honest about when they were a good buy.

I also miss the days when my tiny blonde co-pilot would pipe up from her car seat as we got ready to drive to Auntie’s house, “Mommy, today I want to be the one who says, ‘MOVE IT, BUDDY!’”

And if we still lived in Berkley, I would be able to tell my soon-to-be-driving daughter, “Sweetie, you don’t need your license! You can walk wherever you need to go!”

Lost and Found

Posted by fabricpile Sat, 20 Jan 2007 20:00:00 GMT

My favorite part of being the director of a small library is acquisitions. I get to buy books, DVDs and other materials. It’s actually a very time-consuming part of my job. But, dang, it’s fun!

As do most libraries, I order a lot of books from Baker & Taylor. I also take advantage of Amazon.com for older books, some DVDs and great prices on used materials from secondary sellers. Reading reviews and browsing through the lists are part of the fun. And I don’t have to worry about establishing tax-exempt status with them because they don’t charge sales tax.

This past week, the library received an Amazon box which contained, among other things, the first two seasons of the TV show Lost:

And the first two Found books:

I don’t remember ordering them together, but I must have. I hope the Amazon employee who packed it got as much of a laugh out of it as I did.

Kiss a lovely moose! Why moose? You just have to read it to find out.

Buck'n D'OH!

Posted by fabricpile Mon, 15 Jan 2007 12:50:00 GMT

Somewhere in Carroll county this morning there is a whitetail deer with, at best, a very sore ass.

The girls and I were coming home from Fort Wayne last evening when we crested a hill along 25 just east of Delphi. I had a split second to make a decision: hit the deer that was standing in my west-bound lane, or swerve and hit the one that was in the east-bound lane. As I slammed on the brakes, the thought flashed through my mind that I might end up hitting both of them. And a stream of expletives flashed out of my mouth.

The dumb animals did start to move, but I couldn’t avoid hitting one of them. My front quarter clonked into his rear quarter, flipping him off the road. I looked behind to see him struggling up the embankment and into the woods with his lucky companion.

I pulled off the road to assess the damage to the Momtana (apparently none). As I waited to allow my muscles to stop shaking uncontrollably, I took the opportunity to expound on last week’s biology lesson: the affects of the hormone adrenaline.

Somehow I think the girls will remember the cursing and the “thunk” more than the science discussion.

No blog is complete without photos of the cats. Compliments of Kira.

Yummy Yellow

Posted by fabricpile Sat, 06 Jan 2007 02:49:00 GMT

Nothing brightens up a dull, rainy day like bright, sunny yellow.

Lemons were on sale last week, and Mark and I have been dreaming for some time of making Alton Brown’s lemon curd recipe. (“If you only know how to make one dessert food . . . .”)

I got a great zester for Christmas. I can finally zest a lemon with ease. The process smelled wonderful and got us all excited for the finished product.

The lemon curd didn’t turn out perfectly, but I’m pretty sure I know what I did wrong and I’ll fix it next time. Everybody agreed it was shiny. And it was shiny, too.

The lemon curd-ish sauce tasted wonderful paired with the berry scones I made using one of my other culinary Christmas gifts—a cast iron scone pan.

Resolution or Resignation

Posted by fabricpile Wed, 03 Jan 2007 00:11:00 GMT

My alias is Fabricpile for good reason. I have a lot of fabric—a lot of fabric. Mostly it is contained, but there is always a renegade pile or two to contend with.

The new year generally brings new plans, new promises, new projects. This year is going to be a little different for me. In 2007, rather than worry too much about creating the next new project, I plan to dig out the unfinished projects from my piles. And finish them. I don’t have a good count yet, but I know that the projects include a wedding quilt (embarrasingly overdue), baby quilt (baby not yet born, I’m doing okay on this one), multiple birthday and Christmas gifts, and other wonderful things.

I was a bit ambitious today since it’s the final day before returning to a normal work and school schedule for us all. I spent some quality time in the closet early this morning and finished the following small projects:

A sewing bag which was partially constructed as a demo for a class I used to teach. The sewing-themed fabric makes it a perfect to carry other projects in need of completion this year.

A little flower bag which will make a great gift container or little girl’s purse.

A small coffee mug motif quilt I designed and appliqued several years ago.

Progress from here may be a bit slower, but I’m resigned I resolve to keep at it.
