Support your local bike mechanic librarian!
I just had one of my best reference questions ever from a 10 year old boy:
“Can you please help me? My bike chain came off and I don’t know how to get it back on!”
So I went outside, got the chain on for him, showed him why it came off and how to adjust it so that it would be less likely to do so in the near future.
Maybe I’m setting the bar a little high for other librarians, but who cares?! If I impress a kid with how cool a librarian can be, it’s a good thing.

This is Herbie’s BDFF Wags. Wags and his little sister Sparky stayed with us while their family was in England for a week.
Wags has been around the block a few times, so he showed Herbie a few new tricks like how to hide a soccer ball far away from your human when you’re too tired to be tempted to fetch it. He also taught Herbie all about what it’s like to have (and use) a tail. Herbie taught him how to play tackle soccer and keep-away.
It’s impossible to catch Sparky on film (or physically catch her for that matter) because she is quite proficient at boinging out of reach. We think she learned that being owned by a five-year-old girl.

Happy 40th to my oldest—er, I mean the friend I’ve had longer than any other!
Your official birthday present is me not posting old pictures of us from 1980! Lucky for both of us, they are still tucked away in boxes from our move.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows arrived in my office this morning. One copy is sitting on my desk taunting me. Funny thing, though, I am not the least bit interested in ruining the experience of reading it aloud with the kids. It won’t even be opened up.
Note to the Scholastic lawyers: It’s going in the safe, already! It will have multiple levels of security and won’t be handed over to the public until Saturday, of course. Sheesh!

This evening, I participated in a marathon read-aloud of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince at Barnes & Noble. All of the chapters are long in that book! The kids said I did a great job. I love reading those books aloud.
Kira, Mark, Emma and Henry have agreed that I should continue our tradition and read the last book aloud to them. I am going to allow Kira and Mark to read it on their own. I can no longer protect them from the spoilers that will no doubt be all around us once again. I know they’ll keep quiet about it and let the rest of us take our time and savor the experience.
On the way home from the book store, my phone rang. A well-known Detroit number came up on caller ID. When I said, “Hello?” I couldn’t quite make out the jumble of noise. Then I realized that I was listening to Sting singing Every Little Thing She Does is Magic.
The Police concert at The Palace! Of course the call quality was terrible, but the thought was awesome. Thanks, Bala! You made my night even more magic!

Clerk #1 to Clerk #2: You’re working late this afternoon!
C#2: I’m trying to make up some hours. I was off all last week on jury duty.
C#1: Oh! Did you get selected for a jury?
C#2 Yeah! I thought they would think I was too young, but they picked me!
C#1: Oooh! What was the trial about?
C#2: It was, um . . . . I can’t remember what it was about!
My guess is that the defendent would be thrilled to know that one of the jurors couldn’t remember what the trial was all about only days after serving on the jury!
