The Perfect Sushi Chocolate? Who Knew?!

Posted by fabricpile Sun, 04 Nov 2007 03:23:00 GMT

Another Saturday night, another bottle of wine, another round of Hei Sei Alaska Rolls, and another wonderful chocolate selection to round out the evening.

Vosges makes some pretty interesting exotic bars. I have a number of them tucked away for evenings just like tonight. The Black Pearl Bar has wasabi, ginger and black sesame seeds. I was skeptical, but other than the chocolate being a bit on the waxy side (especially for the price), it was really good.

The sesame seeds add a very subtle, crunchy texture, and the ginger gives the chocolate an interesting flowery flavor, but none of us could really detect the wasabi. We thought about smearing on some of our own, but that might have just been the wine talking.

This one is waiting on the chocolate shelf for its moment of glory. I just can’t decide what to pair it with. Any suggestions (besides fried eggs and hash browns)?

The Gold Standard

Posted by fabricpile Fri, 02 Nov 2007 23:53:00 GMT

There is nothing I can say about the amount of chocolate I have consumed in my lifetime that won’t make everyone roll their eyes and say, “We know already!”

So I’ll cut to the chase. These are by far the best chocolates I have ever tasted. Ever, ever, ever. Let a Torn Ranch Java Truffle melt on your tongue and it will be forever in your heart.

The trouble is they’re not easy to come by. They’re only available retail online as part of larger gift baskets (too expensive and who wants all that other stuff anyway?!) I’ve even spoken with the company and they won’t let me buy them directly—not even by the gross (Oh, yes I would!)

I’m lucky that Gretel loves them, too, because she’s more than happy to order them for me—but only in the colder months of the year. I’ve been looking forward to November since last winter!

I won’t tell you how many I ordered, but if you’re really nice to me, I’ll be glad to share.

Tiny Little Gems

Kudos to the confectioner who finally decided it was worth the effort to coat sunflower seeds with chocolate and colorful candy a la m&m’s.

These little cuties are really yummy. They are also beautiful—which is good because it keeps me from devouring them too quickly.

Practically Perfect

Posted by fabricpile Wed, 30 May 2007 02:37:00 GMT

My kitchen cupboards are actually in pretty good shape for 40 years old. They are dark and ugly right now, but I plan to refinish them as an interim update before we do a blow-out kitchen overhaul in a few years.

There is one cabinet which has a very strange shelf configuration. It has a very short shelf which seemed at first glance to be a waste of space

After pondering over it for a few days and thinking about changing it, it occurred to me how truly perfect it is.

My favorite chocolate has a cozy little home to call its own. I am currently completely enamoured of Ghirardelli’s Espresso Escape and Lindt’s new single-origin Madagascar. I also like Lindt’s Equador, but not quite as much.

I just wish my children would settle for M&M’s or Hershey’s. I may soon have to move my stash to a new, undisclosed location to keep it safe. Then what will I do with that weird little shelf?

One of the things I love best about being a librarian is always having the opportunity to learn new things by helping others. Not only can I find information for a school report on ancient Babylon (935), I can also help patrons learn how to tile their kitchen floor (698) or train an incorrigible pooch (636.7).

And when I’m the patron as well as the librarian, I know just where to look for the books and information. Knitting socks as an exercise in librarianship? 746.432!

Currently, I’m studying the books around 641.6—give or take a few decimal places. There’s some very tasty stuff in the library!

Chip Happens--So Be Prepared!

Posted by fabricpile Mon, 23 Oct 2006 14:49:00 GMT

Chocolate chips were a pantry staple at my house when I was a little girl. You never knew when the urge to bake a batch of cookies would strike—and we were prepared!

Eating the chips wasn’t allowed—and we all knew it. There was other chocolate in the house for eating. The chips were always Nestles—and they were exclusively for cookies.

Here’s the well-used recipe straight from Grandma Gensic’s collection:

After having two parties in a row this weekend, it could have been difficult to motivate the kids this morning. Geometry, spelling, vocabulary, biology, and history were all made easier by the smell of baking cookies.

Who can have the Monday-morning grumpies when there are freshly-baked cookies to eat?

Decadent Daughter

Kira is the family’s official brownie maker. She bakes them so frequently that sometimes she goes on auto-pilot while mixing and wonders if she’s forgotten an ingredient.

It never takes much provocation for her to get out the makings and whip up a batch from her signature old-fashioned recipe. For that, the rest of the family is always grateful.

S'more Moonlight

Posted by fabricpile Sun, 08 Oct 2006 01:21:00 GMT

At Emma’s request, we had a bonfire this evening. The moon was shining, the owls were calling, and the coyotes howling.

A campfire needs s’mores, of course: Hersheys, Honey Maids and Jet Puffs. Joe and Kira roasted the marshmallows to perfection.

Check out the s’mores kits that Laura’s Candy sells. Maybe we should try making our own marshmallows and graham crackers sometime so we can fancy up our fireside treats. I don’t think the kids want me to tamper with tradition on this one, though.

Like Mother Like Daughter

Just in case you thought that I was the only one in the house passionate about chocolate, take a look at Kira’s ‘Kiwilog’ entry for today.

And I won’t tell where the chocolate is, but I will say that having a ginormous safe in my office is handy. Very handy, indeed.
