My Little Death Star

The Trouble With Tribbles was trivial.

With the help of Emma and Henry, The Empire has formed a new alliance with Heather Winds, Rainbow Splash, Amber Locks and the whole My Little Pony Club.

Look out, Sebulba! Vader has a new pod racer.

Meanwhile, the Rebels reconnoiter at the Littlest Pet Shop to plan their next move.

New Black Belts

Posted by fabricpile Sat, 18 Nov 2006 04:24:00 GMT

Here are the newest First Degree Black Belts in West Lafayette—with attitude! Emma and I even got to spar one round together. She didn’t beat me up too bad. We both broke boards on our first attempts.

CHAVA! Black Belt! w00t!

When I started working out with the kids two years ago, I had a hard time imagining myself actually earning my black belt.

But here I am. And there’s Emma—who will no doubt remember that she had her new rank for a good 10 minutes before I received mine!

Party Weekend Redux

Posted by fabricpile Wed, 25 Oct 2006 13:17:00 GMT

It’s great that the girls’ birthdays come just before Halloween. Carving Jack-O-Lanterns is a wonderful group activity and it takes care of the now customary “party favor” tradition.

The big kids helped by gutting all of the pumpkins. There was a little grumbling, but they all had fun.

Cousin It helped.

So did Mr. Spooky—Teron.

The little kids were able to spend their time carving designs.

When the sun went down, we had a bonfire and everyone enjoyed roasting hot dogs and marshmallows. Emma is already looking forward to her next birthday party!

My New Favorite Flower

Posted by fabricpile Mon, 02 Oct 2006 17:12:00 GMT

Our trips to Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello always inspired me to plant new flowers. While walking Jefferson’s paths, I fell in love with Joseph’s Coat (Amaranthus tricolor). In Maryland I planted it, only to discover that it heartily reseeded itself over every available bit of dirt. I accidentally composted it and spread it even further. It’s gorgeous, but I wouldn’t plant it again.

I also fell in love with globed amaranth (Gomphrena globosa), which is a bit more finicky and stays where it’s planted. I order my seeds each Spring from Monticello’s garden center, even though I can get them just about anywhere. The globes are in full bloom both here and at the library, and I’m tickled when people come in and ask me, “What are those beautiful flowers?”

This year I planted coxcomb (Celosia cristata). The look and feel of these huge flowers delights me (and Emma). They are a little top-heavy for our soft bog soil, so I’ll be sure to give them plenty of support next year.

Happy Feet

My mom made these cool socks for me. They’re really comfortable.

She made me purple socks before, but I wore them out. My mom is the best sock knitter in the world.

I, The Beautiful Princess

Posted by Emma Fri, 24 Feb 2006 16:58:00 GMT

Here is a poem that I wrote:

I, the beautiful princess
Who lives so very high
With the waves blowing west
And the grass blowing east
Oh, what a beautiful princess am I.
With the horses neighing
And the children playing
Oh, what a beautiful princess am I.
