Look out Hoosiers. Kira is Sweet 16 today.
Eyes on the road, there, Mario!
Kira, here are a few tips to keep you safe while you drive. First of all, don’t go in reverse unless you are actually looking in the mirrors. When you used to drive your walker around, you constantly crashed into things. You were awfully proud of yourself, though.
Avoid going over the speed limit. You skipped right through walking and ran up and down the hall with this thing. You can tell by the look on your face that you were hell-bent for speed at only eight months of age.
Always make sure that the horn works just in case you need to blast it at a student who isn’t paying attention on campus and steps out in front of you. And smile, for goodness sake. He might be cute!
Don’t forget to wear your glasses! Vanity is no substitute for being able to actually see the street signs.
Happy Birthday, Kiwibug! Thanks for making us a family.

I’m so glad to finally live in a house that is the perfect canvas for color, texture and design. Our little casa may look plain and simple on the outside, but inside it’s going to be a showcase of creativity.
Kira’s door is beginning to take on a life of its own thanks to her paint and brushes. Since she does most of her work on the computer, it’s a nice change of pace for her.
We’re going to collaborate sometime this weekend on a giant wing design that I can quilt. But tonight I’ve been playing around with a new quilting technique. Bubbles! I can’t go any further, though, after waaaay underestimating the amount of thread I need to complete this section of the quilt.
Dang, dang, dang! So much for the groove I had going. Not that there aren’t plenty of other things to do around here. I think I’ll grab a paint brush and work on my mouldings.

If finally dug up a few old photos of Kira’s real first day of school.
And here’s what Mark-Formerly-Known-as-Max looked like:
His best parlor trick about this time was telling Kira’s teachers at the International School that he could speak French. Then he’d say “French Toast!” in an excellent (and therefore hysterical) fake French accent.

Well, actually this is Kira’s second first day of school. She attended Kindergarten at a private school in Detroit, but that’s it.
It is Mark’s first first day of school—ever!
After 10 years of home schooling these monkeys, they are officially public high school students. Kira is a sophomore and Mark a freshman. We’re excited about the opportunities that the schools here have to offer. It’s going to be a bit of an adjustment for them to be on a strict schedule, and they’re taking some tough classes, but we’re confident that we’ll all do fine with our new routine.

It might sound crazy to get all nostalgic about the days when we lived in an older Detroit suburb, but there were things we could do there that just aren’t possible here on the prairie.
One of the best things about living in Berkley was being just a few blocks away from Westborn Market.
Kira, Max (I can’t think of toddler Max as Mark) and I used to pull the wagon over to Westborn—even in the winter—and bring back wonderful fruits and vegetables. The produce guys could always tell you exactly where the fruits originated and were honest about when they were a good buy.
I also miss the days when my tiny blonde co-pilot would pipe up from her car seat as we got ready to drive to Auntie’s house, “Mommy, today I want to be the one who says, ‘MOVE IT, BUDDY!’”
And if we still lived in Berkley, I would be able to tell my soon-to-be-driving daughter, “Sweetie, you don’t need your license! You can walk wherever you need to go!”
