Yesterday we saved a little junco who knocked himself silly against our window.
Today we watched the sharp-shinned hawk swoop in and scatter the other birds—three of which bonked into windows in their panic.

We brought this junco indoors so he wouldn’t freeze to death while he was stunned.
When he came to his senses, he began flying around inside the house. After a lifetime of watching birds taunt them through windows, our cats were delighted by this twist and even mustered the energy for a chase. Kira finally caught the little guy and let him go outside, but not before he had lost a few feathers. Sonnet collected a couple of the fallen feathers in her mouth—perhaps to impress Heloise with the appearance that she had finished off the poor bird herself.
We watched the hawk as he flew into one of our small pine trees and came out with a chickadee in his talons.

We don’t discriminate when we feed the birds. The little birds come to eat the seeds, and the birds of prey sometimes show up at the Song Bird Smorgasbord.

We thought that this might be a merlin, but it’s more likely that it is a sharp-shinned hawk. It’s a juvenile and identification was not easy. In single-digit temperatures, all it takes is a little food to bring out all kinds of beautiful birds.

Every year, Pop-Pop The Christmas Elf makes us a fabulous wreath to decorate the outside of our house.
Of course, Mary Christmas is the official Chief Decorating Officer. She oversees all holiday decorations and good cheer.
This year we have two new neighbors who can enjoy it with us.

Didn’t feel like making breakfast this morning, so we sent the kids outside to eat snow. We’ll make sure EmmaX eats enough to last until her next visit to the Northlands.
Looks like X ate too much snow:

The kids decided to bury Max, as well:

I suppose I should get busy making the hot cocoa!

Don’t worry, Mom and Dad. They let me in the house right after I finished shoveling the driveway.

Our good friend from our days at Indiana University, Stephen Hicks, became a US citizen yesterday!
The Citizenship Committee no longer screens for Canadian accents, eh?
Congratulations, Stephen.
